History of London City International Airport
In 1981, Reg Ward, the executive director of London City Airport’s development department, proposed to renovate the airport and move it beyond its old form. With the presentation of a complete and serious plan for the development and reconstruction of the London City Airport by Mr. Ward to people like Sir Philip Beck, the reconstruction entered a more serious phase and it did not take long that with a survey of the people of the city of London and their positive opinion, the reconstruction and development project began.
London City International Airport was renovated by an engineering company between 1986 and 1987. After development and reconstruction, the first plane landed at this airport on May 31, 1987, which was a commercial flight. The official opening of London City Airport after the renovation was done in November of the same year, i.e. 1987, by Queen Elizabeth II.
In the first year after the reconstruction of the airport, i.e. 1988, London City Airport received 133 thousand passengers. The first scheduled flights at this airport were to destinations such as Plymouth, Paris, Amsterdam, and Rotterdam. In 1989, the airport authorities requested to widen the airport runway to accommodate more planes. The airport runway was reconstructed and widened by March 5, 1992.
In 1990, London City International Airport received 230,000 passengers, but it did not take long for this number to dwindle. With the outbreak of the war in the Middle East, this number decreased, and in 1993, when 245,000 passengers were transferred from this airport. By 1995, the number of passengers at this airport reached half a million people per year though.
This number continued to increase until five years later, i.e. in 2000, it reached 1 million and 580 thousand people. In the mentioned year, the number of flights reached 30 thousand domestic and international flights per year.
Before the start of the London Summer Olympics held in 2012, the officials of London City International Airport announced that more than 7 million pounds have been allocated for the expansion of the airport’s terminals as well as the improvement of other facilities. Due to the fact that London City International Airport was the closest airport to the Olympic Park and was only 15 minutes away from it, during the games this airport had a limited number of flights.
