History of Castelo de São Jorge

The oldest military fortifications of the hill on which the castle is built dates back to the first century BC. During that period the city of Lisbon was a part of the Roman Empire. Celtic tribes, Greeks, and Carthaginians all have made their marks on the hill during their reigns on the city. After some time under the Suebi, the Visigoths, and the Moors, the first significant fortifications was rebuilt by Muslim forces of Moor.

After the famous historic siege of Lisbon during the crusades and the city was freed by crusaders. When the Lisbon became the capital of Kingdom of Portugal, building up a stronghold on this strategic hill was one of the first actions to be done.
