History of La Scala

After the older opera house of Milan was destroyed by fire in 1776, some of the famous Milanese asked Archduke Ferdinand of Austria-Este to build a new theater for this art-loving city.

After the first design was rejected, the second one that was the design of the current magnificent building was accepted by Empress Maria Teresa. The construction had begun in the location where formerly was the church of Santa Maria Alla Scala. The opera house is named after that very church.

The majestic building was completed in less than 2 years and it was inaugurated in 1778. Since then the journey of one of the most famous art halls of the world had started. When to visit La Scala opera house

Deciding when the best time to visit the La Scala opera house is, completely depends on your purpose of visit. If you are visiting it to see the building and the museum, then you are better to visit it during the spring and fall. In this period of time, it is a little bit less crowded than the other parts of the year. On the other hand, the weather in Milan is lovely during these periods and you can enjoy a fabulous stay.

If the purpose of your visit is to watch a specific performance, then you should simply check on the schedules and plan your visit at the right time. How to visit the opera house

Tickets for your visit can be bought both via the box offices in the complex, or online. In order to skip the lines, you may prefer to use the latter solution.

In order to visit the complex do not forget that it is closed on some special dates, including January 1st,  Easter Sunday, May 1st, August 15th, December 7th, 24th, 25th, 26th, and 31st. it is open in the rest of the days from 9 in the morning to 5:30.
