History of La Scala
After the older opera house of Milan was destroyed by fire in 1776, some of the famous Milanese asked Archduke Ferdinand of Austria-Este to build a new theater for this art-loving city.
After the first design was rejected, the second one that was the design of the current magnificent building was accepted by Empress Maria Teresa. The construction had begun in the location where formerly was the church of Santa Maria Alla Scala. The opera house is named after that very church.
The majestic building was completed in less than 2 years and it was inaugurated in 1778. Since then the journey of one of the most famous art halls of the world had started.
