You may wonder why Ashooradeh Island in Golestan is named as such. The word “Ashooradeh” in Turkmen language means “the island of Ashur” and consists of two parts: “Ashir” (Ashur) and “Ada” (island). The Turkmen people also refer to this island as “Mal Ashir” because, in the past, they used to bring their livestock to the island for grazing from the shores of Bandar Torkaman. In this context, “Mal” means “livestock” and “Ashir” means “bringing.”Ashooradeh Island

The island remained under Russian control until the end of World War II. The Russians built several hospitals, residential buildings, a fortress, and a wooden church on the island. While the wooden church is no longer present, a triangular fortress that remains in the northern part of the island has been registered as a cultural heritage site, serving as a reminder of the Russian occupation. the island’s strategic location provides Iran with access to the Caspian Sea, which has valuable resources such as oil, gas, and minerals.
