About Crocodiles

So, let’s talk about the crocodiles. They range in age from just 1 year to a whopping 27 years! The biggest one in Iran, named “Khan Baba,” calls this park home. Khan Baba is 27 years old and measures 4 meters in length.

When it comes to how long crocodiles live, these ancient creatures, which date back to the time of dinosaurs, typically have a lifespan of around 70 to 80 years. By the time they reach the end of their lives, they can weigh close to a ton.

Crocodiles are known for laying eggs. Sadly, in the wild, many of these eggs don’t make it due to various threats or being eaten by other animals. But at the crocodile park, the eggs are kept safe thanks to the right weather conditions and security measures.

After about 3 months, baby crocodiles hatch from their eggs, and they need to survive to grow up and rejoin the natural cycle. To help them out, these hatchlings are raised in controlled environments using incubators until they’re ready to live their normal lives.

Crocodiles vs. Alligators: What Sets Them Apart

At first glance, crocodiles and alligators might look pretty similar, but they actually have quite a few differences. Both of these reptiles are part of the same scientific order called Crocodilia, but they belong to different families: crocodiles are in the “Crocodylidae” family, while alligators are in the “Alligatoridae” family.

One major difference is their habitat. Crocodiles can thrive in both saltwater and freshwater, whereas alligators are strictly freshwater dwellers. When it comes to their looks, crocodiles sport longer, more pointed snouts, while alligators have shorter, rounder ones. Plus, when an alligator shuts its mouth, you can’t see any of its teeth, but a crocodile’s back teeth peek out over its upper lip when its mouth is closed.

Their skin also tells a different story. Both creatures have tiny, pit-like spots on their skin that act as pressure sensors. However, in crocodiles, these spots are scattered all over their bodies, while alligators only have them on their jaws.

History of Nopak Qeshm Park

The idea for crocodile breeding at Nopak Qeshm Park kicked off in 2006, thanks to Mrs. Roustaei, a zoology expert with a master’s in ecotourism. After some feasibility studies and getting the green light, she and her husband, Mr. Salarvand, who specializes in planning and crocodile breeding, moved to Qeshm and set up the Noavaran Pouya Kimia Qeshm company.

Their hard work paid off, and after persistent follow-ups with various organizations, Nopak Company received the first license to start a crocodile breeding farm in Iran in 2008. By 2010, the Nopak Crocodile Farm was up and running on Hengam Island.

Initially, a plot of 21,000 square meters and a budget of four billion rials were set aside for this project. Eight adult crocodiles were brought over from Southeast Asia to Iran, following all necessary quarantine and transport protocols.

At the same time, work was in progress on the crocodile park located on Qeshm Island. By 2011, the Nopak Crocodile Park on Qeshm Island opened its doors to visitors, featuring 20 crocodiles as part of the attraction. Research and studies continued, and by 2013, the facility successfully began breeding crocodiles. A few years later, in 2016, the development plan for the Nopak Qeshm Crocodile Park was launched, making it the only artificial crocodile breeding center in the Middle East and a standout attraction on the island.

How Crocodiles are Raised at Nopak

Crocodiles lay eggs, and their hatchlings typically emerge after about three months. In the first year at the breeding complex, various factors like temperature, humidity, pool water, and environmental influences were closely monitored to ensure successful reproduction. One major challenge was the soil temperature, which could spike dramatically during certain months, posing serious issues for breeding. To tackle this, all eggs are incubated in a controlled artificial environment using incubators, allowing for temperature regulation and helping the crocodiles mature properly.

Respect for Wildlife and Habitat

When visiting, it’s super important to show respect for all wildlife and keep a safe distance to avoid bothering them. Never feed the crocodiles or toss anything into their enclosures, as this can mess with their natural behavior and make them reliant on humans, which isn’t good for them.

Also, let’s be mindful of the park’s habitat and facilities. Sticking to the marked paths and following the rules helps protect the crocodiles’ environment and keeps both the animals and visitors safe.

Best Time to Check Out Qeshm Crocodile Park

Qeshm can get super hot and sticky, so hitting the island in the first half of the year might not be the best idea. If you’re not used to that kind of weather, winter is definitely the way to go for exploring Qeshm. You won’t need any heavy winter gear; just pack some light, summery clothes.
