Introduction to Lake Alandan

Lake Alandan, also known as “Ozani Dam,” is one of the most unique and fascinating lakes in Iran and is considered one of the most picturesque areas in Mazandaran. Interestingly, the water in this beautiful natural lake is solely supplied by atmospheric precipitation, snowfall, and rainfall.

In fact, no river or spring contributes to the formation of this lake. Additionally, the variation in the area of Lake Alandan during rainy and dry seasons is one of its unique characteristics.

This lake covers an area of 17 hectares, which expands to 30 hectares with increased rainfall, providing water for the surrounding rice fields. It’s worth mentioning that the lush and vast Alandan forest surrounding this lake enhances the beauty and charm of this area.

Understanding the History of Lake Alandan

Regarding the history of Lake Alandan, experts believe that this lake has ancient origins. Its formation is attributed to a geological period known as the “Quaternary.”

Therefore, this beautiful lake is considered one of the oldest natural wonders of Mazandaran, with an estimated age of about 2.5 million years.

It is also important to note that the most significant event during the Quaternary period was the dispersal of humans. Due to the drastic climatic changes during this period, it is unlikely that humans played a significant role in the formation of Lake Alandan.

It is worth mentioning that this natural and scenic attraction in Mazandaran province was registered as a national heritage of Iran in November 2015.

Why is Lake Alandan also called a dam?

As mentioned, one of the unique features of Lake Alandan is that its water supply comes solely from seasonal rainfall. In fact, no river flows towards this lake, and its water is only replenished by atmospheric precipitation.

The special type of soil in this area, the impermeability of water in it, the slope of the land, and the layout of the dam are cited as other reasons for the formation and sustainability of the lake.

During the warm seasons with low rainfall, the lake is estimated to cover an area of about 17 hectares. With increased rainfall or during the cold and rainy seasons, the volume of water in the lake almost doubles, expanding its area to 30 hectares.

Therefore, the more it rains, the more water Lake Alandan stores, making it larger. This is why this lake is also called a “dam,” and its water is utilized for the rice fields in the surrounding villages.

Familiarity with the climate of Lake Alandan

Spring is considered one of the best seasons to travel to Lake Alandan in Sari. In this season, plants sprout again, and the beauty and balanced spring weather await tourists. The environment of this lake is also beautiful in autumn, with pleasant and cool weather. In this season, the colorful forest becomes filled with yellow and orange leaves, making the area ideal for photography.

However, the winters at Lake Alandan are very cold, and the forest and the lake freeze in the cold and sometimes snowy or rainy weather, with the lake itself occasionally freezing over. Wild ducks migrating and the frozen surface of the lake are among the beauties of this season at the lake; however, due to the cold weather, we do not recommend traveling to this area during this season.

Furthermore, swimming in this area puts the natural ecosystem of aquatic animals at risk, so it’s better to reconsider this option.
