The Tower of Pir Shahriar in Mazandaran Province

Mazandaran is one of Iran’s most beautiful and lush provinces, with its pristine nature and untouched cities always attracting tourists. Throughout history, Mazandaran has been a region of interest for rulers, resulting in many historical structures hidden within its cities. If you’ve passed through the village of Lomerz, you’ve likely heard of the Tower of Pir Shahriar. This historical site is one of the tourist attractions in this beautiful village, located in the Rastupi district along the path to the mountain villages of Pol Sefid and Sari.

When you enter the village of Lomerz and proceed, you will spot the Tower of Pir Shahriar on the left among a multitude of sky-reaching trees. The origins of this tower date back to the 5th century AH. The architecture of the Tower of Pir Shahriar is circular with a roof resembling a sugarloaf, constructed entirely of brick and plaster. Unfortunately, over time, the decorative tiles of the dome have disappeared. The walls of the tower are approximately 2.35 meters thick, with the brick part of the wall having a diameter of 70 centimeters.

Old reports about the Tower of Pir Shahriar mention that in the past, the tower had a door and an old wooden chest, but these are not present today. In archaeological investigations conducted in the 1960s, pieces of a decorative wooden chest were discovered for the first time. After extensive efforts, archaeologists were able to extract information related to this historical artifact. This ancient chest was built during the reign of the mystic hermit Saleh Zahed, during the era of Shahriar. The inscriptions on it were carved by the mystic hermit Ali Khurumeh Zahed. The construction of the wooden chest mausoleum was completed in the month of Muharram in the year 880 AH. With the efforts of Dr. Manouchehr Studeh and Dr. Abdolrahman Emadi, two mystical poems by two hermit poets, inscribed on the chest mausoleum, were restored and recited.
