A Bit About Lagoons

Before introducing the Estil Lagoon, it’s good to know a bit about Lagoons and their importance. Lagoons are amazing areas where many birds, fish, and plants spend their lives. They serve as a calm refuge for migratory species, providing shelter from the cold.

Therefore, the existence of Lagoons is equivalent to the survival of many animal species, many of which we may not be familiar with. However, their presence is undoubtedly important for ecosystems and for the Earth itself.

Lagoons are environments with characteristics that exist between land and water, leading to the formation of extraordinary ecosystems. Marshes, swamps, fens, heathlands, and ponds are all considered Lagoons. Fortunately, Iran also has beautiful Lagoons, one of which is the Estil Lagoon.

Introduction to the Estil Lagoon

The Estil Lagoon spans an area of 140 hectares and is one of the most beautiful and mysterious freshwater Lagoons in northern Iran, located 7 kilometers from the city of Astara. In 2005, this Lagoon was selected as one of the five exemplary tourist areas in Gilan Province and has since become one of the most important tourist attractions in this region. The Lagoon is also known by names such as Estil Lagoon, Floating Trees Lagoon, and Moving Lake.

When visiting this Lagoon, you feel as if you are witnessing a beautiful three-dimensional painting of water and trees, as the image of the lush green trees reflected in the clear water is so captivating that you cannot take your eyes away. The water of this Lagoon mirrors the beautiful surroundings, appearing like a mirror in the heart of nature.

What Makes Estil Lagoon Mysterious and Why Should We Visit It?

As mentioned, the Estil Lagoon is one of the most beautiful and mysterious natural attractions of Astara. But you might wonder why this is the case. There are several reasons for this. The first is the presence of vast and lush forests surrounding the Lagoon, which is a perfect option for nature lovers.

The second reason is the migratory birds that come to this area every year from polar regions, Central Europe, and beyond the Caspian Sea to breed in the Estil Lagoon.

Why Is the Estil Lagoon Called the Floating and Moving Lake?

Another aspect of the attraction and mystery of the Estil Lagoon relates to the presence of particular plant species, especially the rare floating alder, which has roots suspended in the water, causing them to constantly change location without staying in one place!

However, the primary reason that has led to the popularity and attraction of this Lagoon, giving it the title of a floating and moving lake, is the movement of the Lagoon itself. Camp there for a few days, and you’ll notice this phenomenon. During these movements, some short trees sink beneath the water and then reemerge after a while.

What is the reason for naming the Estil Lagoon?

You might be curious about why the Estil Lagoon is named as such. It appears that there are three different narratives or theories regarding this naming. According to the first narrative, the reason for the naming is the populus trees. As mentioned, the roots of these trees are constantly moving.

For this reason, some believe that “Estil” means “moving” or “shaking,” and the name comes from the continuous motion of the trees. Another reason mentioned for this naming is that “Hastil” in the local dialect means “water hole,” and the name Estil is derived from that.

However, the last narrative about the naming of this Lagoon refers to a person who was the landowner around the Lagoon in ancient times. It is said that his last name was “Estil,” and the Lagoon’s name was taken from his name.

Familiarity with the vegetation of Estil Lagoon

The flora and fauna of Estil Lagoon are very diverse, housing more than 80 species of plants and animals, some of which are endangered. As mentioned, the floating populus trees on the eastern side of the Lagoon are considered a unique feature of this area.

The roots of these trees are in the water, making it appear as if the trees are floating. This phenomenon gives a mysterious allure to the Lagoon.

In the western part of the Lagoon, lush and dense forests create a picturesque view for tourists. In addition to what has been mentioned, bulrush, water lilies, and ferns are other plant species in this area.

Familiarity with the animal species of Estil Lagoon

The fauna of Estil Lagoon is as diverse as its flora. Various fish and amphibians, such as carp, duck fish, frogs, and newts, inhabit this remarkable Lagoon.

This Lagoon is also home to various migratory birds from Central Europe, the North Caspian Sea, and polar regions, including ducks, geese, swans, storks, and teal. Some of these birds, such as the “red-beaked Eurasian dipper,” are classified as rare species.

Additionally, animals like jackals, foxes, wild boars, and river otters can be observed around the lake. Other creatures that live in this area include a large type of Lagoon rat called nutria and various snakes and turtles. It is worth mentioning that this Lagoon and its surrounding environment have now been declared a protected hunting area.

Environmental Crisis at Estil Lagoon

Unfortunately, the management of Lagoons in the country is not at all satisfactory, and this also applies to Estil Lagoon. The reasons for this situation include excessive use and extraction of water for irrigation of rice paddies in Astarabad, as well as human encroachment near the Lagoon, which has reduced bird migrations.

Moreover, the increase in construction around the Lagoon, the activities of asphalt and sand and gravel workshops, and most disturbingly, the disposal of waste and rubble, alongside power transmission towers crossing through it, are gradually leading this Lagoon towards a slow death.

Since 2005, Estil Lagoon has been one of five sample tourist destinations in Gilan Province, significantly contributing to the economic growth of this province. Fortunately, in 2014, following abundant rainfall, the area of this Lagoon increased substantially as announced by the Department of Environment Protection of Gilan Province.

Recreational Facilities at the Estil Lagoon

Unfortunately, it must be said that the Estil Lagoon lacks sufficient facilities for tourists, providing only a few pavilions for visitors and a designated area for washing dishes. Additionally, there is an opportunity for boating in the Lagoon.

What activities can we engage in at the Estil Lagoon?

Among the recreational activities you can enjoy in the Estil Lagoon area are boating with pedal or motorboats. This way, you can view the Lagoon up close and even take photographs. The floating willow trees are among the most beautiful subjects for photography.

Moreover, the lush surroundings of this Lagoon are one of the most beautiful and ideal places for picnicking and camping, where you can spend enjoyable times with family, friends, and companions.

Additionally, as mentioned, this Lagoon is home to rare migratory birds, and you can engage in birdwatching in this area. The Red-nosed Gunner and the group of swans are among the birds you may have the chance to see in different seasons, especially in fall and winter.

Furthermore, nature walking around the Lagoon is another enjoyable activity you can do in the Estil area.

Best Time to Visit Estil Lagoon

The Estil Lagoon has unique beauties in every season and month; however, the best time to visit is in the fall, as this is when birds migrate to the Lagoon, and the summer humidity decreases. Spring is also a good time to visit this Lagoon.

Important Tips for Visiting Estil Lagoon

As mentioned, the Estil Lagoon is a protected area, so do not think about hunting birds! Fishing is also not permitted in this Lagoon; you can only purchase the fish you want from nearby fish vendors.

Do not get too close to the Lagoon, as there is a possibility of the ground collapsing beneath you, leading you to sink into the mud.
